Course Description: The orchestra has been a platform for innovation for centuries. Join Materials for the Arts and the New York Philharmonic to broaden your perspective on what orchestral music is and can be. NY Phil Teaching Artist Laura Andel alongside MFTA Teaching Artists Louie Miranda will engage educators — both those with and without prior experience in music — in a full-day professional development workshop that explores creativity, sound, and communication. Participants will learn about and create found-sound instruments using items found in MFTA’s warehouse of treasures and compose music using graphic scores / alternative notation. This workshop is for all teachers looking for ways to boost classroom community, encourage creativity, and make student-led STEAM inquiry projects. It also incorporates music and themes from the NY Phil’s upcoming February 2025 Young People’s Concerts for Schools. CTLE credit and shopping at MFTA are also available.
