Contemporary Reuse 2019 – Gallery Opening and Art Making
April 18, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
FreeJoin us for the gallery opening for Contemporary Reuse, a yearly exhibition which brings together the work of current and impactful artists who celebrate reusable materials in their art practice. On display are a wide variety of explorations into reuse in art. The sculptures of Annie Varnot are made of hundreds of colored drinking straws. Large silver prints by Volmeur showcase enlarged mold-damaged slides from CERN labs in Geneva. The installations by Yasmin Gur are made with reclaimed wood scraps. Sol’Sax transforms milk crates and sports equipment into shrines. Bundle sculptures by Ian Trask are formed out of colored electrical cords, hardware and much more.
On this evening, we invite guests to tour the exhibition and experience reuse artmaking with drinking straws. Inspired by the work of exhibiting artist Annie Varnot, John Cloud Kaiser, the exhibition’s curator and MFTA’s Director of Education, will lead a straw sculptures artmaking booth. Come explore how common objects can be transformed into works of art.
