Exhibition Celebration: “The Warehouse” by Woomin Kim
February 15 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeMaterials for the Arts is pleased to present The Warehouse, a solo exhibition by MFTA Artist-in-Residence Woomin Kim. Queens-based Korean textile artist, Woomin Kim often examines urban environments and immigrant life, offering her own interpretations through textile and sculptural works.
During her residency, Kim found inspiration in MFTA’s expansive 35,000-square-foot warehouse filled with a diverse array of supplies. Through a captivating series of textile works, she has intricately crafted large-scale interpretations of the warehouse, featuring vivid representations of MFTA’s iconic yellow supply bins, vibrant ribbons, costumes, disassembled mannequin parts, an assortment of arts and crafts materials, and even a whimsical carousel horse.
At this exhibition celebration, MFTA invites you to explore The Warehouse with artist Woomin Kim and enjoy a mandala workshop led by Nadine Nelson. Using objects from MFTA’s shelves delve into the art of creating mandalas, circular designs representing harmony and wholeness, for an artistic exploration of creative reuse.
In addition to mandala making, Kim herself will lead a “braiding stories,” where participants can create wearable accessories incorporating personal items and found objects, giving a second life and new journey to materials.
