March Third Thursday: Oboe-Making led by Skip Laplante Featuring Anthony Sertel Dean’s Lamp Camp!
March 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeJoin us next Thursday for our March Third Thursday programming featuring an oboe-making activity led by former MFTA teaching artist Skip Laplante. La Plante invents, builds, composes for, performs on and teaches with musical instruments built from trash. Alongside Bash the Trash, he’s presented nearly 2,000 programs about acoustics in schools across the nation. For his Third Thursday programming, Laplante will lead participants in making soda straw oboes for music playing. Attendees will then have the opportunity to create panpipes crafted from the most unconventional materials imaginable. Cardboard boxes, soup cans, shoes — nothing is off limits for this musical instrument extravaganza!
The evening’s festivities will also feature a Lamp Camp by Anthony Sertel Dean, a sound artist, educator, and technologist focused on telling stories of community and self. Anthony’s work can be heard in theater (Kennedy Center, New Victory Theater, Public Theater, The Kitchen), film (Film at Lincoln Center, Busan International Film Festival), radio (WNYC, Night Vale Presents), and gallery installations (Fridman Gallery, Half Gallery, Swiss Institute). For their Lamp Camp, Sertel Dean will go through a brief history of art lamps, cover the safety of working with electricity like this, and demonstrate how to make lamps with simple, affordable tools.
Construct lamps, create instruments, and rejoice in art-making at our warehouse Thursday, March 21!
