Mermaid Parade Decorating at MFTA
June 14 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeJoin MFTA next Friday, June 14, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm for an art-making project that will be paraded at the one and only Coney Island USA Mermaid Parade later this month! Attendees are invited to collaboratively decorate malaguas (jellyfish) made from umbrellas or create their own costumery if they will be marching in the parade themselves.
“Malagua” is a project spearheaded by MFTA Education Coordinator Niceli Portugal Constantine to raise awareness about water protection and pollution. Made from trash and reused materials like CDs, umbrellas, microfilm, and more, these participatory sculptures will celebrate our city’s ever-eclectic spirit during the Mermaid Parade while drawing attention to our oceans and bodies of water which are also deeply in need of protection.
Individuals interested in marching in this iconic NYC parade can register at a fee of $35 per individual at coneyisland.com/mermaidparaderegistration. Spectators are also welcome to watch on the sidelines, and highly encouraged to cheer as Materials for the Arts makes their way through the parade.
